What is Career Guidance?
Career guidance and development is the process through which people come to understand themselves as they relate to the world of work and their role in it. The process whereby the individual develops a work identity. Assisting them in visualising their path forward.
What is the Goal of Career Guidance?
The goal of the Career Guidance Assessment is to establish a pathway between the individual’s INTERNAL career (individual’s interest, personality, abilities, skills, aptitude, self-concept, values and beliefs) and the individual’s EXTERNAL career (individual’s picture of success, career anchors, career stage etc.) by means of:
- Enhancing the individual’s self-knowledge
- Exploration of self-development and career options
- Facilitating an informed career choice/future career plan decision
Assessments used in the Career Guidance Process
The PISA Integrity Assessment Centre Career Guidance Assessment is a combination of multiple assessments to facilitate getting a better perspective. These assessments include:
- Aptitude test
- Interest Questionnaire
- Personality Profiling
- Values Profiling
Brown and Krane (2000) describe the main goal of career guidance as a process to “help individuals make congruent career choices that will allow them to have a job, a career and a satisfactory life in a changing society”.
Personality Profiling - Jung Personality Questionnaire (JPQ):
Personality profiling is the process of evaluating an individual’s personal attributes, values and life skills in an effort to maximize congruence between these factors and career choice or to enhance job performance. JPQ is based on the personality theory of Jung – extraversion-introversion; thought-feeling; sensation-intuition; and judgement-perception.
Values Profiling - Value Scales (VS):
Values profiling helps understand the individual’s internal value system which is used to make judgements about tasks, relationships, issues, events, and goals.Values profiling helps understand the individual’s internal value system which is used to make judgements about tasks, relationships, issues, events, and goals.
In essence it helps to:
- Discover an individual’s underlying motivators
- Identify career drivers/needs that drive achievement
- Identify motivation to achieve and “why” and “what” we want to achieve
- Help individuals make informed career guidance decisions
Interest Questionnaires - South African Vocational Interest Inventory (SAVII):
An interest questionnaire assesses an individual’s natural inclination and preference for certain activities or circumstances over others. It is used to determine whether the individual can engage in the preferred activity as a hobby or as a way to earn a living.
Aptitute Test - Differential Aptitude Test (DAT):
An aptitude test is an assessment that evaluates the talent/ability/potential to perform a certain task, with no prior knowledge and/or training. It consists of a battery of tests that assess various aptitudes/abilities. Examples of types of the aptitudes measured include:
- Mechanical insight
- Reading comprehension
- Spatial ability
- Verbal reasoning
- Non-verbal reasoning
- Detail orientation
